the more obligated I felt to overcome the obstacles encountered on my
way to realizing it.
FOURTH is application. With the belief now an integral part of you,
you’re ready for action. The stronger your belief, the easier it will be to cope
with the obstacles in the application process. One of the most common
mistakes is trying to take action before your belief is fully established. Did
you decide on the spur of the moment to stop smoking? Your chances of
success are poor. But once you have fully internalized the belief that you
can, the process will be simple and natural. To apply your belief, you need
to write up an organized program comprised of targets and timetables.
FIFTH, we come to evaluation. Set intermediary targets, measure your
progress, and give yourself a small reward each time you reach a new
target. The process may be long, but there is no reason why it should not
be enjoyable. Training a puppy takes time and is reinforced with treats.
Retraining an adult human is no simple matter and definitely deserves
rewards for sub-targets reached: dinner in a good restaurant, an electronic
gadget, or whatever it is that makes you happy. As you move forward
successfully, your belief in yourself and your ability to realize your goal
will also improve. Write down the results, track your progress, and don’t
rely on memory alone.

Handling Obstacles the Easy Way
On your way to realizing your belief, you will encounter obstacles.
Acknowledge in advance the simple fact that obstacles do not signal the
end of the process. An obstacle is no more than a temporary detour route.
If I could change the dictionary entry for “failure,” I would insert “obstacle”
instead, in its sense of challenge. Challenges arouse our creativity and draw
us into seeking solutions. Would you prefer an easy crossword puzzle or
a challenging one? Obstacles and overcoming them teach us to look for
